Sad to see Aunt Kit go. Forty-two years since I last saw her and will probably never see her again. The only blood relative I have seen for twenty years. Lots of lines in her face, but much animation. Thin and energetic, she reminds me of Aunt Maud.

November 7, 1961

After a long cold and gloomy weekend it is bright again. There was a very hard frost this morning. Yesterday Edward Deming Andrews, who has written several books on the Shakers and has a wonderful collection of furniture, drawings etc., was here with his wife and Ralph McCallister, who is in charge of the project for the restoration of the Pleasant Hill Shaker Colony. We had a short but pleasant visit. Andrews was interested in some of the benches in the library and in the old refectory tables. They are also restoring the Shaker Community at Hancock, Mass. This will be a stricter restoration. The Pleasant Hill project will include “educational facilities”–i.e. there will be courses, conferences, etc. And the papers are sanguine about its possibilities as a “tourist attraction.” They want to make it sound as if there is a fast buck in it for somebody, then it will make sense in American terms. This is evidently not McCallister’s idea–but perhaps the fast buck group will after all prevail. Really, I am interested, and would like it to be as good as it actually can be. And I still hope Shirley Burden will come and take pictures.
